Facing Cancer Together announced today that Thrive Together and Facing Cancer Together will be merging. The combined entity will operate as Facing Cancer Together. Thrive will cease to exist as a separate organization in 2012. Given the challenging economic times, the similarities of our missions, and our long history of collaboration, we believe that this merger will improve our ability to serve you.

Facing Cancer Together was founded in 2009 by a group of clinicians dedicated to providing support, education and wellness services to people with cancer in Greater Boston. Services include support groups, expressive arts programming, and mind-body wellness classes for people living with cancer and their loved ones. Thrive was founded in 2003 to serve pre-menopausal women with breast cancer. Programs have included support groups for cancer survivors, peer-to-peer mentoring, and information services.

There will be no disruption in services or programming at Facing Cancer Together as a result of this merger. Facing Cancer Together will begin to manage the Thrive Survivorship Group in 2012 and is currently investigating ways to expand programming for young women with breast cancer. Additionally, Jennifer Rosenberg and Cynthia Lacasse, President and Treasurer of Thrive, respectively, will join the Facing Cancer Together board.

The Friends of Mel Foundation (www.friendsofmel.org) is recognizing the importance of this merger with a generous matching grant of up to $2,500 to Facing Cancer Together. For the next 30 days, every dollar you donate to Facing Cancer Together will be matched by Friends of Mel. Please take advantage of this limited time offer by giving generously today. Many thanks to Friends of Mel for this special grant!

We are certain that, together, we will continue to make a positive difference for those affected by cancer and their loved ones.

During this holiday season, many of us reflect on our blessings: friends, family, job, health. At the same time, we are painfully aware that there are many people much less fortunate than we are.

People living with cancer are not only dealing with a devastating medical diagnosis, they are often dealing with other losses: relationships, jobs, and sometimes even their homes. The cancer journey is, at best, anxiety-producing and uncertain. For many, it can be lonely and terrifying.

When that one word — CANCER — changes their worlds, we are there for them.

Facing Cancer Together offers emotional support through professionally-led groups, education, and wellness programs. But most of all, Facing Cancer Together provides a community of hope where people find not just comfort and encouragement, but the tools to live as well as they can as they navigate a diagnosis of cancer. FCT is one of the few programs in the Greater Boston area that offers cancer support in a community setting.

Through the generosity of the Friends of Mel Foundation, every dollar donated to Facing Cancer Together in the next 30 days will be matched up to a total of $2,500. Please help us take advantage of this important opportunity to fund our cancer support programs.

Facing Cancer Together relies on your support to make our programming available to people with cancer and their loved ones regardless of their capacity to pay, type of cancer, or stage of illness. Facing Cancer Together is a public charity exempt from income tax under Section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code. As such, contributions are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law.

Every dollar provides help and hope to someone navigating the trauma of a cancer diagnosis. Please do what you can and make a donation today. We simply cannot do this work without you.
